Spirulina

Have you heard of spirulina? No worries, many people are completely unaware of this highly advantageous algae. According to Dr. Axe, there are approximately 1,200 peer-reviewed scientific articles observing this plant’s benefits. Did you know that millions of people in India, Chile, Taiwan, and Bangladesh consume high amounts of arsenic through drinking water? It’s so bad that thousands of these people have developed chronic arsenic poisoning. While specific treatment for arsenic poisoning is unknown, researchers in Bangladesh have explored what spirulina has to offer. In one study, 24 subjects with chronic arsenic poisoning were given 250 mg with 2 mg of zinc twice a day. Compared to the results of 17 subjects taking a placebo, the participants in the experimental group experienced a 47% decrease of arsenic (draxe). But that’s not all!

Cancer-Preventative

According the University of Maryland Medical Center, “a number of animal and test tube studies suggest that spirulina increases production of antibodies, infection-fighting proteins, and other cells that improve immunity and help ward off infection and chronic illnesses such as cancer” (draxe). Spirulina is such a hit that it can be found in north of 70 peer-reviewed articles testing the plant’s ability to effect cancer cells. Explicitly, researchers discovered that compared to untreated cells, spirulina considerably decreased the proliferation of human pancreatic cancer cell lines in vitro in a dose-dependent manner. The possibilities of what spirulina can do for other types of cancer are endless (draxe).

Boosts Energy, Improves Sinus Issues, Aids Weight Loss

Dr. Oz recommends mixing spirulina with lime to better energy performance, and people who take it regularly report having an abundance of energy. This ingredient promotes weight loss, can curb hunger, and reduce sinus inflammation. Studies have also found spirulina to reduce itching, nasal congestion, and sneezing (draxe).

Competing with Chlorella

MS, RD Kerri-Ann Jennings believes that chlorella is the new algae in town. Since it has a hard-celled wall that our bodies cannot digest, chlorella must be consumed as a supplement. The species are 50-60% protein, 6-40% iron, contains 100 mg of omega-3s per 3 grams of chlorella, and small quantities of copper, zinc, calcium, magnesium, folic acid, B vitamins, and potassium. In one study, men produced more antibodies when taking chlorella than when they took a placebo. In another study that took place over 8 weeks, healthy adults taking chlorella showed increased immune activity. This ingredient can lower fight chronic diseases with its antioxidants of chlorophyll, beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein, and Vitamin C. It doesn’t stop there: Chlorella may help improve blood lipid levels, promote kidney and heart health, and control blood sugar levels (healthline).

Gingko Biloba

Claudication

Claudication is exercise-induced cramping leg pain, usually caused by artery obstruction. A study proved the species effective when tested in 8 studies. People taking the supplement walked nearly 34 meter father than those on placebo. It is fact that gingko biloba works just as well as prescription medication used for advancing pain-free walking distance (umm).

Brain Function

One of the oldest living tree species, gingko biloba, is also one of the best-selling supplements in the U.S. and Europe. Studies have shown that it improves blood flow—which is why it is so often used in Europe for treating dementia. Now research indicates gingko biloba’s ability to protect nerve cells that are damaged by Alzheimer’s disease. People with either dementia or Alzheimer’s may experience improved cognitive function, social behavior, and therefore have an easier time in day-to-day life. For such reasons, gingko biloba is thought of as the “brain herb” (umm).

Wheatgrass

Some nutritionists claim that wheatgrass contains more than 100 different elements we need in order to live a long and healthy life. Wheatgrass is full of amino acids, needed for protein-building, enzymes, needed for digestion, and a number of vitamins and minerals that fight diseases. Cancers thrive in acidic environments, but fail in alkaline ones. That’s where wheatgrass comes into play. It prevents acidosis, which is the condition of high acid levels resulting from low alkalinity. Which element can we thank? Why, chlorophyll of course! Chlorophyll balances the body’s pH level and protects cells from damage associated with free radicals. Research has uncovered that wheatgrass greatly hinders oxidative degradation of lipids in the liver and protects the powerhouse of cells. The Integrated Oncology and Palliative Care Unit in Israel found that wheatgrass can be used for cancer prevention and treating cancer holistically. Perhaps wheatgrass will open new avenues for how we approach the big C altogether (draxe).

Dulse

Dulse may be another ingredient you have not heard of. It is a rich red seaweed that has been used especially in Europe for many years and is even being called the “new kale” since it has twice the nutritional value of kale. It is fat-free and low in carbohydrates. A great source of calcium, dulse strengthens bones and protects joints and connective tissue, preventing the degeneration we endure from osteoporosis. Like wheatgrass, dulse’s antioxidant trait protects our cells from free radical damage. Its potassium prevents cardiovascular issues, strokes, and atherosclerosis. One benefit we have not come across until now is the promotion of thyroid health. Dulse contains high levels of iodine, assisting the thyroid to function properly. Lacking iodine could also harm pregnant women in that iodine is needed for healthy fetus development. When this gland is not as active as it should be, we are at risk for weight gain, muscular weakness, depression, and fatigue (healthyfocus, inverse). Evidently, when our thyroid fails, we fail.
