11 Avenues of Valerian

VALERIAN ROOT is a common ingredient in many dietary supplement products. What most people don’t know are the pivotal aspects of valerian. Instead of taking a number of medications with side effects that set people back, leaving them in more pain and further distressed, VALERIAN is a great natural option. As with any dietary supplement, it is highly advised to consult a licensed physician before ingesting VALERIAN ROOT.

Here are eleven avenues VALERIAN offers on the road to wellness:

1. Sleep and Muscle Tension
Valerian root can treat sleep disorders and muscle tension. It is known as a sedative herb that raises the quality of sleep for people who suffer from fibromyalgia, which is a chronic disorder characterized by fatigue and widespread musculoskeletal pain. It even increases the ability to concentrate, which can eliminate the brain fog often caused by fibromyalgia (effectiveremedies).

2. Migraines
People who suffer from migraines may find valerian effective in eliminating incessant pain that often leads to nausea (effectiveremedies, healthyfocus).

3. Pain
Valerian root is known as a natural remedy for knee and lower back pain. Often referred to as “nature’s tranquilizer,” this supplement is a natural pain reliever that lessens nerve sensitivity (doctoroz).

4. Cramps
Anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and soothing properties go a long way—especially when it comes to relieving the highly unpleasant experience of menstrual cramps and premenstrual syndrome (effectiveremedies).

5. Menopause
In a study of 100 menopausal women with poor quality sleep, 30% of the subjects receiving valerian claimed higher quality sleep just after 4 weeks (selfhacked). Another study showed that valerian may be effective in treating menopausal hot flashes. Here, “68 menopausal women took valerian capsules having 255 mg of this root 3 times per day within 8 weeks. The results showed a significant reduction in the condition of hot flashes after 8 weeks” (effectiveremedies).

6. Heart Health
This supplements assists in strengthening blood vessels and improving the heart’s elasticity. Considering the fact that approximately “610,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year–that's 1 in every 4 deaths,” valerian might be what helps heart patients live longer and healthier lives (cdc).

7. RLS
Restlessness is a common reason why people who have restless leg syndrome experience difficulty when trying to fall asleep at night. People with RLS may find solace in valerian root as it helps to relax leg muscles, helping them fall asleep easier (effectiveremedies).

8. ADHD in Children
Valerian increases GABA levels in the brain. Deficiencies of this neurotransmitter causes restlessness, obsessive behavior, and anxiety—all symptoms commonly seen in ADHD. In one study of 30 children ages 5 to 11 who were given valerian 3 times a day for 2 weeks, improved ADHD symptoms were reported. Most striking, these positive effects disappeared just after 1 week of discontinuing valerian treatment (selfhacked).

9. Blood Pressure
Valerian root comprises antidiuretic and hypotensive properties that help regulate blood pressure (effectiveremedies).

10. Anxiety
GABA regulates nerve cells and assists people with nervous conditions by calming anxiety. Interestingly, pharmaceutical anxiety drugs such as valium and Xanax work the same way, by increasing GABA levels in the brain. What distinguishes valerian is that although it may be weaker, this supplement is a more natural and less addictive remedy (healthyfocus).

11. Dreaming
Here’s a fun one! GABA is found in valerian extracts in quantities sufficient to cause a sedative effect, which is why in a 6-week pilot study of 24 patients with stress-induced insomnia, 16% of subjects taking valerian reported vivid dreams (selfhacked).
