Hope for Hair Loss

Thinning hair and loss of hair can be caused by a multitude of lifestyle habits, genetics, or both. There are certain nutrients of which we absolutely need adequate amounts. These nutrients are what aid follicles to produce hair naturally. To make sure we stay on top of hair health, it’s important to know which vitamins and minerals to be cognizant of.

Ways to help

Scalp massage – Easy, affordable, and no side effects involved – maybe just some relaxation. When washing your hair, gently apply pressure with fingertips around the scalp. This promotes blood flow and therefore thicker, stronger hair (healthline).

Multivitamins – Healthy hair relies on overall good health. In cases of malnutrition, new hair could fail to generate follicles, thereby preventing thick hair growth. A simple blood test from a licensed physician can help determine if you are deficient in any nutrients. Many multivitamins comprise iron, folic acid, and zinc. These nutrients are a great way to help hair remain thick and strong. It is important not to overdo it on the vitamins though—that is, if you already have a sufficient amount in your system. Taking an unneeded amount can do more harm than good.

Folic acid – A type of B vitamin that is important for new cell growth, folic acid is thought to help generate new hair in balding areas.

Fish Oil – Omega-3 fats nourish hair, support thickening of hair and reduce inflammation that has the potential of causing hair loss. Foods rich in omega-3 include tuna, mackerel, salmon, walnuts, and egg yolks. These foods can reduce inflammation and balance hormones. For individuals who do not eat fish, the quickest way to fish oil, a supplement, most popularly taken as capsules and softgels, supplementation might be the way to go (draxe).

Zinc – For decades, zinc compounds have been used to treat disorders such as telogen effluvium, the loss of hair due to stress, and alopecia areata. Why? Because zinc promotes healthy hair follicles. Its agency extends to inhibiting hair follicle regression and expediting hair follicle recovery.

B-Complex Vitamin (Biotin and B5) – Biotin and pantothenic acid (Vitamin B5) have been used as alternative treatments for hair loss. Biotin can rebuild hair shingles that have endured damage from excessive shampooing, blow-drying and ironing, and sun exposure. Vitamin B5, on the other hand, supports the adrenal glands, which work to stimulate hair growth (draxe).

Iron – Iron deficiency can lead to hair loss. To avoid this deficiency, eat plenty of collard greens, Swiss chard, and black beans. When taking an iron supplement, caution is extremely important. An overload of iron could be dangerous and potentially fatal.

Rosemary Essential Oil – Many believe rosemary oil increases cellular metabolism, which stimulates hair growth (draxe). A recent human study investigated the clinical efficacy of rosemary oil in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia. People with this condition were treated for six months with either rosemary oil or minoxidal, a medication used to encourage hair growth and slow balding (control group). At the end of these six months, both groups experienced a considerable increase in hair count. This study proved that rosemary oil is just as effective as hair growth medicines, with less side effects.
