Supplement Benefits: Phosphatidylserine Mood and Mentality

A growing number of studies are proving that phosphatidylserine (PS) supplements may help accelerate exercise capacity, boost athletic ability, decrease muscle soreness and limit the rise in cortisol levels, the stress hormone that typically increases from overtraining. Moreover, PS can give your non-athletic customers the boost they need to decrease memory loss and improve mood. Here’s how:

According to Whole Foods Magazine, “[phosphatidylserine] is a crucial building block of cell membranes, ensuring their fluidity and structure, and ultimately, their function of brain cells by stabilizing the membranes of the cells. PS has been demonstrated in clinical trials to improve memory, concentration, word recall, and mood in middle-aged and elderly subjects with dementia and age-related cognitive decline. For older adults with moderate cognitive impairment, PS has produced consistently modest increases in recall of word lists.”

Memory

In 2010, a Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition study involved 78 elderly people with mild cognitive impairment. These subjects were assigned to six months of treatment with either phosphatidylserine supplements or a placebo. Tests conducted at the end of the six months showed subjects who had relatively low memory scores at the start of the study were found to have experienced a considerable improvement in memory.

Mood

PS is believed to play an important role in working to regulate mood. A 2015 Mental Illness study focused on people over 65 years of age who had major depression. These participants were administered supplements containing phosphatidylserine as well as omega-3s fatty acids DHA and EPA three times a day for 12 weeks. By the end of the study, scores on the depression scale had improved.

Slowing It Down

There is some promise in using PS in combo with omega-3s, as is suggested by a 2012 study published in European Psychiatry. 200 children with ADHD were treated with either a phosphatidylserine- and omega-3-containing supplement or a placebo over 15 weeks. The results? Subjects taking the combo supplement experienced a greater decrease in impulsive/hyperactive behavior and a greater improvement in mood compared to subjects taking the placebo.
