Fortifying the Immune System: One Supplement at a Time

While the virus may have customers feeling defenseless, your private label business can make a difference. By partnering with a supplement manufacturer as experienced as Makers Nutrition, you can promote immune system supporting supplements that will help put customers in control of their wellbeing.

COUCH POTATO CONSUMERS

Pandemic or not, interest in immune health is sticking, and for good reason. It is always a good idea to get ahead of one’s health. Cheryl Myers paints the picture well in Vitamin Retailer. She writes:

“Imagine if you sit on a couch all year and all you eat is junk food, beer and sugary sodas. You will gain a bunch of weight and lose muscle tone. After a year or more of immobility and dietary neglect, you suddenly realize that it is bikini season next week! Does anyone realistically believe that you can start eating right, taking vitamins and working out for a week and be at your physical best? It is going to take much longer to lose the excess weight and exercise to have the body you think looks best on the beach. What would have been the best time to start to get into bikini shape? Last year. But the second-best time is right now!”

Similar to the bikini story, one cannot build a strong immune system overnight. Like exercise and healthy eating, taking supplements and doing what one can to improve his or her immune system status takes time, but the longer they work at it, the stronger it may become. Perhaps you are used to offering sports nutrition products, but now is a great time to encourage those stuck in a loop to get started on a road to better immune health.

Here are some ingredients that have been shown to make an impact on the immune health of many:

Vitamin D

Vitamin D3, or cholecalciferol, is far more effective than Vitamin D2, which is why it is found is a number of dietary supplements. Evidence proves that D3 can help improve the symptoms of viral infections and shows some promise for COVID-19. According to Myers, in a human study of vitamin D versus placebo for prevention of respiratory infections during the winter, the placebo group had double the number of days with symptoms (runny nose, sneezing, coughing) than the vitamin D group. Findings also included people with the highest levels of vitamin D have the lowest level of mortality. This is not to say that people should be taking excess amounts of vitamin D in hopes to prevent contracting the virus. Dietary supplements cannot treat, cure, or prevent coronavirus. However, it is an important ingredient to consider when creating your next private label immune health product. Vitamin D can support not only immune system function, but brain, heart, and bone health.

Elderberry

A recent study unveiled that taking elderberry while traveling can significantly reduce the risk of colds or the flu. Researchers gathered 312 economy-class passengers on a flight from Australia to Europe. Half the group received a clinically studied elderberry called Haschberg, while the other half received a placebo. All passengers were evaluated for cold and flu symptoms before, during, and after their flights. The elderberry group had 50% fewer illnesses compared to the placebo group, and if people in the elderberry group did get sick with the cold or flu, they recovered 34% faster and their symptoms were much less severe. Elderberry is also associated with UV protection, diuretic effects, and fighting bacteria.

Propolis

A little-known substance gathered by bees, propolis, is carried back to beehives, mixed with some enzymes and beeswax, and used to protect hives from infection by sealing openings and sensitive areas. Thanks to bees’ production of propolis, the substance has been shown to fight against viruses, fungal infections, and bacteria. For humans, propolis offers immune-boosting benefits. In fact, scientists have found over 300 compounds in propolis, which are mostly polyphenols, or antioxidants that fight off disease and damage in the body. With more research underway regarding the effects of propolis, I think we can all agree that bees aren’t all that bad, after all.
